How are dried flowers produced?

These are the steps involved:

  1. SOW
  2. GROW
  3. HARVEST
  4. BUNCH
  5. HANG
  6. DRY
  7. PROCESS
  8. PACK

Drying a bunch of flowers at home may seem like a simple enough exercise when broken down into a list like above – perhaps you have tried it to save flowers within bouquets, favourite blooms from your own garden, or as part of a craft project? Seemingly straightforward crafting tasks can end up taking over the house, causing mess and chaos, so to imagine them upscaled to a commercial level can be a little mindblowing. We work with some amazing dried flower producers from Europe, and they have perfected large-scale methods of dried flower production that keep our warehouse well stocked!

Let’s show you how they do it!

We regularly get asked how our dried flowers are produced. Take a peek behind the scenes at one of our suppliers to see how they manage the operation to get the finished, dry product ready for us.

It may be that when thinking of the Netherlands, you imagine a vast, flat landscape covered in windmills and tulips, however, the Dutch grow a wider variety of floral delights than that.

SOWING

Men sowing seeds by manual seed drill, and using a tractor and seed drill

These lands, reclaimed from the sea over hundreds of years, have well-managed, fertile soils and are ideal for growing different flowers. Lamboo Dried & Deco are based in the heart of this area, a prime position to take advantage of both the growing conditions and proximity to the shipping port.

GROWING

Traditional hand-harvesting techniques ensure that the flowers are not damaged, and reduces soil compaction by heavy machinery.

HARVESTING

Once the flowers have been gathered, they need to be bunched, ready for drying. This is also done by hand.

BUNCHING

DRYING

Painting and dying to offer alternative colours and textures to the dried product is all carried out by hand, using water and vegetable-based colourants. Wastewater from this process is cleaned and recycled within the factory.

Once the flowers have been fully dried, they are carefully packed by hand, ready for shipping. We receive weekly deliveries of these beautiful, natural, seasonal products.
