Sustainability
I don’t think anyone doubts the importance of product sustainability these days. This beautiful world of ours is feeling the pressure of humanity’s quest to pillage commodities of all kinds and the subsequent disposal of things created seemingly designed to only last a short while. It’s everyone’s responsibility to reduce waste and be mindful of the consequences of what we do and how we do it.
We source products from some of the original producers within the industry, all of whom have over thirty years of experience working with dried flowers. The vast majority of flowers we offer are grown outdoors and close to the drying facilities. Harvesting is carried out using traditional techniques whereby they are gathered and sorted by hand. Crops are grown and harvested annually so are 100% sustainable. The drying facilities are state of the art, and our main production partner and supplier uses renewable energy sources and recycles all waste material. The dyes used to colour the products are all water-based and all wastewater is cleaned and processed in line with local government guidelines to ensure it is 100% safe before disposal. As a group of companies, we share the same goals and do everything we can to uphold the environmentally friendly image that dried flowers rightly have, and we constantly strive to make improvements by reviewing the procedures involved in production and using recycled and recyclable packing wherever possible.
Flowers aside, many of the other products we offer at Atlas come from the world-renowned Smithers-Oasis. One thing that has become very important to this international company, is a holistic approach to sustainability. Their policy is based on what they call the three pillars of responsibility, which comprises of people, the planet, and prosperity.
The Big Green Plan has been launched by Oasis, outlining a series of goals they wish to achieve that are an industry-specific response to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the Responsible Production and Consumption, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Quality Educationelements. Over the next four years, the intention is to reduce waste and recycle a great deal more, decrease their own carbon footprint and that of their suppliers, use less water, and collaborate with suppliers and clients alike to promote education in sustainability.
So, what can you purchase from Atlas within this range? We introduced our floral sundries in June this year, and within it, there are several Eco options. We hope to add to it as time goes on – don’t be frightened to ask us about products, if there’s demand, we can look at stocking new items from the range. Head over to the Floral Sundries section on our website and check out the items on offer!
